Vehicle Road Tax Charges

If you need to tax your vehicle, it’s important to know that road tax rates may have changed since your last renewal. The amount you pay is now calculated based on several factors, including your vehicle’s emissions, fuel type, age, and value.

How Vehicle Tax Is Calculated

Vehicles registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017
For these vehicles, tax rates are determined solely by fuel type and CO₂ emissions.

Vehicles registered on or after 1 April 2017

A tax payment is required when the vehicle is first registered, covering the first 12 months.
After this, tax must be paid every 6 or 12 months at a standard rate.

Additional Charges for Higher-Value Vehicles

If your car or motorhome has a list price (the manufacturer’s published price before discounts) of over £40,000: An additional £355 per year is charged. This extra fee applies for 5 years, starting from the second time the vehicle is taxed. Zero-emission vehicles are exempt from this additional charge. What You Need to Renew Your Vehicle Tax

To renew your vehicle tax online, you’ll need a reference number from one of the following: DVLA correspondence – such as a recent tax reminder or final notice V5C log book – registered in your current name New keeper slip (V5C/2) – if you’ve recently purchased the vehicle If you don’t have any of these documents, you’ll need to apply for a replacement log book. You can do this at the same time as submitting your vehicle tax application.
